Research is under way to find out what role domestic ducks in South-East Asia play in the spread of bird flu.
The lethal human strain of the disease has now been found in the African country of Nigeria, after spreading through eastern Europe.
Joanne Meers from Australia's Cooperative Research Centre for Biosecurity says it is part of a worldwide effort to contain bird flu.
"We're trying to understand the role that ducks play in maintaining the virus, and in amplifying the virus in producing more virus, and spreading that virus to chickens," she said.
"Also to look at the efficacy of vaccination against the virus in ducks."
