Who gets the bird flu?
Here are the statistics for confirmed human H5N1 infections:
쨌 Over 90% of the people who have gotten bird flu are under 40.
쨌 The fatality rate among those from ages 10-19 was 73%.
쨌 The overall fatality rate since December, 2003 was 56%.
Initially bird flu infections were limited to Southeast Asia. As birds migrated westward from Asia in late 2005 and 2006, reports of infected birds began to be reported in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. As of July, 2006 over 60 countries confirmed infections of H5N1 in birds, and in 10 countries human infections have been confirmed by the World Health Organization.
